One of our patrons calls himself Shrek. His real name is Eddie.

He recently commented that after a nervous breakdown, he was destitute. Losing his home, family and his self-respect. He started coming to Siloam Mission for coffee and meals and friendship. Soon he asked to volunteer to keep himself occupied.

When we opened our art program, he was one of the first participants. Eddie comments that the program was therapeutic and many things he lost in his season of poverty have started to be restored, like hope. He concludes that the art classes have given him the confidence to begin rebuilding his life and relationships.

At Siloam Mission, we say hope begins with a meal for just $2.58. And we know so much more is accomplished. Thank you for your support to heolp us rebuild broken lives.

From the Front line, I'm John Mohan.

John Mohan, CEO of Siloam MissionJohn Mohan
Chief Executive Officer

John Mohan has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Siloam Mission since 2001, where he took a small soup kitchen and turned it into one of Canada’s leading agencies serving the poor and the homeless.

John began his professional career pastoring a small church in Midale, Saskatchewan in 1979. In the following years, John continued his career, pastoring in five prairie communities. It was during those formative years that John and his wife Brenda first began caring for those who found themselves on the fringes of society, challenged with personal and relational struggles. They partnered with an interfaith food bank in Calgary, AB and hosted annual Christmas dinners for needy people in Swift Current, SK.

After twenty-two years, John left his pastoral ministry career to assume the leadership of Siloam Mission. At that time, Siloam was a small mission of two staff members operating out of a 2,400-square-foot converted restaurant with average donor support of $68,000 per year. Under Mohan’s visionary leadership, Siloam grew exponentially, expanding with programs and services that not only help alleviate the hardships of homelessness but also help transition our city’s homeless into healthy self-sufficient lifestyles.

A popular and humorous speaker, John travels extensively to advocate on behalf of the homeless and consult with emerging street level ministries and agencies. He is a graduate of International Bible College in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and an ordained elder with the Church of the Nazarene. John is also a weekly columnist for the Winnipeg Sun and has written numerous articles for other publications.

He is a member of Street Level: The National Roundtable on Poverty and Homelessness and Co-Chair of the 2009 Street Level Conference. He is also a Director, member of the Executive Committee and the Secretary for the Canadian Coalition of Large Multi-Service Shelters.

John and his wife Brenda (Siloam Mission's Senior Administrative Officer) have been married for more than 29 years, have three adult children and one grandchild.
